Furniture Assembly in Philadelphia, PA

Philadelphia homes make furniture assembly harder than the instructions suggest. Rowhouse staircases are narrow and steep, often with a tight turn at the top, and many pieces simply won't fit up them once built. Condo buildings in Center City and University City require elevator reservations and loading dock times. Basements are low, third floors are hot, and older floors are rarely level, so a bookcase that stands straight in a showroom can lean in a South Philly bedroom. On top of that, the city has a constant flow of move-ins and move-outs, from students around Temple, Drexel and Penn to first-time owners in Fishtown and families settling in the Northeast, and everyone needs their furniture built quickly.

We bring flat-pack boxes up to the room where the furniture will live and assemble it there, following the instructions carefully and checking every connection. We level pieces on uneven old floors with shims or adjustable feet and anchor tall dressers and bookcases to the wall using the right hardware for plaster, brick or drywall, because tip-over prevention matters, especially with children in the house. We handle beds, cribs, desks, wardrobes, shelving and outdoor furniture, and when we're finished, we break down the boxes and carry away the packaging so your room is clear.

What this covers

  • Beds, bunk beds and cribs
  • Dressers, wardrobes and armoires
  • Desks, office chairs and workstations
  • Bookcases and shelving units
  • Wall anchoring to prevent tip-overs
  • Leveling on uneven floors
  • Outdoor and roof-deck furniture
  • Packaging breakdown and removal
A note from around here: Move-in season around University City, Temple and Fishtown keeps us busy assembling beds, desks and shelving, while families in Northeast Philly and the Main Line often need cribs, bunk beds and large wardrobes built and anchored.

How a furniture assembly visit usually goes

Plan the Route

We look at stairways, hallways and doors, and decide where each piece should be assembled so it can be put in place without damage.

Unpack and Organize

We lay out parts and hardware, check against the instructions, and flag anything missing or damaged before we start.

Assemble and Level

We build each piece carefully, tighten every connection, and level it on your floor with shims or adjustable feet where needed.

Anchor and Clean Up

We anchor tall furniture to the wall, test drawers and doors, and break down and haul away boxes and packaging.

Condo and apartment buildings have their own rhythm. Many towers around Rittenhouse, Logan Square and Old City require you to reserve the service elevator, use the loading dock during set hours, and show a certificate of insurance before contractors can work. We're used to those requirements and can work with building staff to schedule everything. In rowhouses, the challenge is different: tight stairways, low basement ceilings and uneven floors. We also assemble furniture on roof decks and in small backyards, checking that outdoor pieces are secure against the strong gusts that come with summer storms. Basements are another common spot for assembly in Philadelphia, especially for storage shelving, home gyms and laundry cabinets. Many rowhouse basements are low, damp and uneven, so we keep particleboard pieces up off the floor where possible and suggest metal or plastic units where moisture is a concern.

What shapes the price in Philadelphia

Furniture assembly is priced by the number and complexity of pieces. A nightstand or simple bookcase takes far less time than a wardrobe with sliding doors, a loft bed or a large sectional. Anchoring adds time, and masonry anchors take longer than drywall screws. Narrow stairs, condo elevator bookings and third-floor rooms add handling time, and pieces that need two people for safe lifting cost more. Bundling several items into one visit is the best way to keep the total down. If a piece arrives damaged or with missing hardware, we'll stop and let you know before we spend time on it, so you can contact the retailer instead of paying for a half-built item.

Neighbors often ask

What if the furniture won't fit up my stairs once it's built?

That's why we assemble in the room. Most flat-pack boxes fit up a rowhouse staircase even when the finished piece wouldn't. For bulkier items, we may remove a door from its hinges, or plan how to bring it through a wider window or rear opening. We'll look at the route before we start.

Do you anchor furniture to plaster or brick walls?

Yes. We use anchors suited to your walls, toggles or screws into framing for plaster and lath, masonry anchors for brick, and appropriate fasteners for drywall. Anchoring tall pieces is one of the most important safety steps in a home with kids, and it's especially important on the uneven floors of older houses.

Can you assemble a crib or bunk bed and check it for safety?

Yes. We follow the manufacturer's instructions exactly, tighten every fastener, confirm the mattress support is set to the right height, and check that guardrails and ladders are solid. We anchor bunk beds and tall nursery dressers to the wall, and we'll point out anything that looks damaged or missing before the piece is used rather than improvising a part.

Can you take apart furniture for a move and rebuild it at the new place?

Yes. We disassemble beds, desks, wardrobes and similar pieces, bag and label the hardware, and rebuild them at the new home, whether that's across the street or across the river. Some cheaper particleboard pieces don't survive being taken apart well, and we'll tell you honestly if a piece is likely to weaken.

Do you assemble office furniture for home workspaces?

Yes. Desks, standing desks, file cabinets, shelving and office chairs are common requests. We can also mount monitors, add cable trays and organize cords so the workspace is tidy and safe.
